Seventy-nine seniors in the class of 2022 will earn the Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy after successfully attaining proficiency in both English and an additional language by high school graduation.

Seventy-nine seniors in the class of 2022 will earn the Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy after successfully attaining proficiency in both English and an additional language by high school graduation. In its fourth year of the program, the district will award the first Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy for Vietnamese. This year, one student will receive the seal both in French and in Spanish. The 79 seniors in the district’s fourth cohort earned seals in four languages: French, Latin, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

“It is especially exciting to celebrate our fourth – and largest – class of graduating students to earn the Seal of Biliteracy,” said Superintendent Deborah A. Gist. “I am also delighted that we will be awarding the first Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy for Vietnamese!”

Students who successfully earn the Seal of Biliteracy not only increase global cultural competence but also gain strong language skills that will help them be successful in college, careers, and life. Students from 10 high schools participated in this program, which offered a number of language proficiency assessments in five languages.

Gist said: “Tulsa Public Schools is internationally known for our language programs. Our district continues to take the lead in implementing the Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy and award the most diverse number of language proficiency assessments in the state. This is an important milestone for our students and for our district as we expand this opportunity for our young people to demonstrate their readiness to succeed in an increasingly global economy.”

Tulsa Public Schools was the first public school district in the State of Oklahoma to offer the Seal of Biliteracy in 11 different languages in 2019 and will continue to offer the Seal of Biliteracy for future graduating classes.
