students work on a project in class

Each year on September 17th, Constitution Day serves as an excellent opportunity to focus on Tulsa Public Schools commitment to prepare students for civic life. Social studies teachers plan a variety of engaging, interactive lessons designed to make the Constitution come alive. Students participated in grade level and state standards aligned activities to reflect on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and the enduring importance of the U.S. Constitution.

At Monroe Demonstration Academy, 7th grade students in Nhandi Johnson’s social studies class engaged in a lesson to closely read and analyze the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution.

At Will Rogers College High School, social studies teacher Jo Glenn and Librarian Stephanie Brucks hosted a voter registration drive for 12th grade students. Students become well-versed in the intricacies of the voting process, including voter eligibility and how to find your polling place. Students at the end of the presentation chose whether or not they wanted to register to vote. Ms. Glenn and Ms. Brucks provided assistance to register 26 students who will be eligible to vote in their first election on November 5 and pre-registered 36 students who are 17.5 and will be eligible to vote when they turn 18.
