Monroe Demonstration Academy has partnered with Youth Medical Mentorship to offer the program to their students after school.

Youth Medical Mentorship is an organization designed to create positive exposure to health careers at an early age to populations traditionally underrepresented in medicine in addition to students with a special interest in medicine. The program introduces mentors in medicine from various backgrounds and teaches students skills necessary for them to become resilient in the path into the medical field.

Twenty 8th grade students are participating in the program this year. Every Tuesday, medical professionals come to Monroe to work with the students. The students learn about healthy foods, prescription medication, CPR, clean air and hygiene, diabetes, eye and foot exams, dentistry, emergency medicine, and organ identification. They recently had the opportunity to visit Tulsa Tech for additional hands-on learning.

The Youth Medical Mentorship program brings in guest speakers, takes students on field trips, and teaches curriculum designed to provide a medical perspective based in math and science skills. The program also pays a stipend to the lead science teacher to hold a science fair at Monroe! During the summer, Youth Medical Mentorship holds a summer camp where students will be able to work with doctors and nurses.
